You can download files in that form. A number of reader applications will render it quite well. I know for certain that the okular pdf reader does this quite well as I use it for that on a couple of those files I have.

You need the
okular-extra-backends

package install for this to work.

If you run

$ apt-cache search epub

you will get a list of related packages. Seems to be well supported in linux.

package installed to have this work.

Okular is obviously a KDE, qt type application which does drag in a bunch of stuff on gtk+ systems but I think it is the best pdf reader available and use it a lot.

I'm using Lithium on my phone. It's epub book specific so won't display pdf's but it does well otherwise.

By the by, .mobi is another book file format I have a few of. From what I gather, its Kindle specific. Or something.

when I download for my kindle they are called mobi in my download file.

Ah, good then. Confirmation. I have the entire Redwall series in both epub and mobi.
