I installed GNU software manager, now unable to install software / apps onto my system using gui or terminal. it will go thorugh the process in the terminal, but display the message do not have permissions to install:

I have software manager ver 3.28.1.
Also Synaptic package manager won't open anymore.

My first step would be to see what the commands are. For example, look in your menu editor to see what is listed under the command box for the application/s that no longer work.

Which actually may explain a lot. Mint has its own unique update system (forget the name). Adding an additional package manager may well cause the behavior he's describing.
