It's a recursive acronym. But it's not an emulator, it's a compatibility layer to run Windows apps in Linux. It even runs some viruses! Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing but it goes to say that it works pretty well. I recommend the Wine compatibility list to see the compatibility of whatever windows app you'd want to use. I only use it for one program: a dindows exclusive bible study tool
