... I've never watched an OS go south because the root partition was maxed out in the upgrade process.
I've actually come close to that a couple of times. Root set too conservatively, and after a while it gets tight.
Just had a look at the Mint site. Found this here
A Linux Mint operating system takes about 15GB and grows as you install additional software. If you can spare the size, give it 100GB. Keep most of your free space for the home partition. User data (downloads, videos, pictures) takes a lot more space.

Dunno. I did however just strip about 1.25 GB out of the OS. NOW I'll reboot.
