now this is interesting went to package manager enter search for srware it brought up iron so I downloaded it. Now I do have problems FF no longer works, mate document reader no longer works, and iron does not work. Not sure what else is broken but it is a good learning experience.
I found 14 broken packages tried: apt-get-f and that did not work, tried apt-get autoclean that told me I had a pkg running in synaptic, went to synaptic and removed the 14 broken packages. this allowed FF to work but slowly could not watch you tube videos with out stopping to reload several times. I went back to terminal and ran;
apt-get auto clean that worked, so ran apt-get autoremove and apt-get clean. That really made a mess again, could not access the internet, and several other programs would not work. so I reloaded Sparky this time with xfce instead of mate and will now see if I can get used to it may need to find a place to download a larger cusor.
I have beeen running Sparky stable right now Sparky 4.7 xfce. just wish I could move panel to top instead of bottom. I have a Sparky hybrid iso that i have never looked at that I will maybe in the next day or so. as of Friday I am getting out of Dodge.
Don't know but will try.
Took three tries but that worked first 2 I tried draging from middle of panel that did not work third try I went to the right hand end of panel and tried draging from there and that workd I now have it on top Thanks Cromag.
The good lady's laptop has somehow lost it's operating system. She called me in because her password would not work, I check my note book and she was using the correct password. I went to bios-system-security and we changed the password. it now works but tells us no operating system found. so I went to boot set up and it shows that there is no operating system. I did a quick check on the harddrive and it passed. I stuck a DVD with a ios on it in the dvd drive and the drive does not start up. I get a box saying no operating system, install operating system. At the moment I am at a lost at what to do. Any sugestions?
Yes GB is right this is a new laptop bought it in Oct/Nov 2017 for the good lady, I never use it, except to install what operating system she likes. I belive I had to do something different to install a linux system on it. But cannot rember what it was I wrote it down somewhere I don't remember where. This getting old sucks I can rember what happened 50 years ago no proplem, but damn if I can remember what happened last month.
Thank's everyone for your help. I finely got into BIOS about 6 hours ago and found that legacy was disabled, efi was disabled among other things and using the sparky dvd I found grub and swap were gone. At that point I installed Sparky 4.9 xfce and the laptop is up and running. only one small problem left to fix, before you can get to the operating system you have to use the Admin. pasword then Sparky comes up and you can enter the password for sparky and you are there. In the morning when I can see better I will go into BIOS and see if I can change that.
The good lady says the admin password is no problem to her, she says just leave it there. Did some thinking last night in bed one of the best 2 places to think that I know of. What came to mind was, while we were on the ship The good lady had the laptop hooked up to the ships electrical system, and I didn't remember seeing the surge protector being used so I ask her. She said no she did not use it so I am thinking we had some fluxation in current. At this point that is my best guess.
Ranch hand while we were sitting in Gatun lake to back through the Panama Canal I got a photo what I think was a training ship 4 masted, never got the name of it. If I can figure out how to post photos I will post it.
No worries Leppie It's written down in my little white book of stuff I need to rember.
